You have to look for it on the map: Pouilly is not a commune but a hamlet of Solutré-Pouilly, in Saône-et-Loire, at the heart of the Mâconnais. A few narrow streets huddled around the cellars, golden stone walls, and vines as far as the eye can see. This is where Domaine Pascal Renaud is based, on Impasse du Tonnelier, and where most of our parcels lie. It is also this hamlet which, together with the neighbouring village of Fuissé, gave its name to the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation.
An amphitheatre of vines
The hamlet’s landscape is shaped by the two great limestone silhouettes that dominate the southern Mâconnais: the Rock of Solutré and the Rock of Vergisson. Between them, the slopes form a natural amphitheatre where the vines enjoy varied exposures — east, south and west — and shallow clay-limestone and clay-marl soils resting on the limestone bedrock. This diversity explains why, a few hundred metres apart, two parcels can produce wines of very different character.
At around 200 to 300 metres above sea level, the vines benefit from good natural ventilation and cool nights that preserve the Chardonnay’s acidity — a precious balance in warm years.
The estate’s lieux-dits
Our single-parcel cuvées come from lieux-dits on the hamlet and its slopes, four of which have been classified Pouilly-Fuissé Premiers Crus since the official recognition of 2020: Aux Bouthières, Aux Chailloux, Les Ménétrières and Vers Cras. To these add the mosaic of parcels behind our Vieilles Vignes and, on the heights, the vines of our Mâcon-Solutré-Pouilly.
