It rises out of the vines like a wave of stone frozen mid-break: the Rock of Solutré, a limestone spur peaking at nearly 500 metres, is the emblem of southern Burgundy. Our estate sits right at its foot, in the hamlet of Pouilly — which is to say we look at it every day, and it watches over our Pouilly-Fuissé and Saint-Véran vines.
A major prehistoric site
Solutré is not just a beautiful rock: it is one of Europe’s great prehistoric sites, occupied by Palaeolithic hunters tens of thousands of years ago. The excavations at its foot yielded countless remains — notably immense accumulations of horse bones — and gave their name to an entire culture, the Solutrean. The Prehistory museum, built into the foot of the Rock, tells this story remarkably well; the site now belongs to the Grand Site de France Solutré Pouilly Vergisson.
The climb to the summit
The path to the top takes about an hour there and back from the hamlet — a moderate effort for an immense reward: at your feet, the amphitheatre of vines, the twin rock of Vergisson, the Saône plain and, on a clear day, the Jura and sometimes the Alps. The winegrower’s tip: climb at the end of the day, when the light gilds the limestone, then come back down… to taste.
