Pouilly-Fuissé is the most illustrious white of the Mâconnais. Its name marries two villages: Fuissé, and Pouilly — the hamlet of Solutré-Pouilly where our estate is based. Recognised in 1936 among the very first French appellations d’origine contrôlée, it spreads across four communes of southern Burgundy: Chaintré, Fuissé, Solutré-Pouilly and Vergisson.
A terroir between two rocks
The vineyard hugs a spectacular landscape, dominated by the limestone silhouettes of the Rock of Solutré and the Rock of Vergisson. On these slopes, Chardonnay — the appellation’s only grape — grows on clay-limestone and clay-marl soils that yield wines both ample and taut, where richness of fruit meets stony minerality. Multiple exposures and rugged relief explain the fine diversity of styles from one climat to the next.
2020: the advent of the Premiers Crus
For a long time, Pouilly-Fuissé was the only great white appellation of Burgundy without a hierarchy of crus. That was put right in 2020: the INAO recognised 22 Premier Cru climats, a historic first for the Mâconnais. The estate has the good fortune to farm four of them, all in the hamlet of Pouilly: Aux Bouthières, Aux Chailloux, Les Ménétrières and Vers Cras — four personalities we vinify separately, with 24 months of ageing in demi-muids.
The style and the table
A Pouilly-Fuissé is recognised by its balance between indulgence — yellow fruit, butter, hazelnut — and mineral verticality. Our cuvées keep for 5 to 10 years depending on their level, and are served at around 14 °C with fine poultry, noble fish, foie gras or boldly flavoured cuisine. To compare styles, start with the Vieilles Vignes, then explore the Premiers Crus — or better still, come and taste them side by side at the cellar.
