Le secret des Vieilles Vignes

“We cultivate 1.80 hectares in Bouthières, including 1.20 hectares of very old vines planted before 1927, from which we select the best to produce this cuvée.These vines, planted at 11,000–12,000 vines/ha, naturally yield little, and we enhance this trait by pruning to produce small, concentrated grapes.Bouthières is a warm sector, where achieving good ripeness is never an issue; in 2015, we harvested early, at the end of August, to preserve acidity and avoid over-ripeness.For the past two years, during vinification, the wines have been placed directly into demi-muids after pressing without settling, in the traditional way. They will be aged for 24 to 36 months,” explains Guillaume Renaud.

Guillaume and Amandine, brother and sister aged 27 and 23, embody the new generation at Domaine Renaud, having joined from 2009 onwards.

While they continue to work in the footsteps of their parents, they are the ones behind the development of single-climate cuvées.

“We have some very fine terroirs in Pouilly-Fuissé as well as in Mâcon-Villages, which we wanted to highlight even more. To do so, we will focus on our owned vineyards and let go of three hectares we were renting,” explains Guillaume Renaud.

Four single-climate cuvées are currently available, and soon there will be seven. The estate extends across the appellations Pouilly-Fuissé (10.5 hectares), Saint-Véran, Mâcon-Solutré, and Mâcon-Charnay. It produces nearly 100,000 bottles each year.

“We plan to build an underground cellar within the next two years, to house large casks and demi-muids,” adds Guillaume. “In my view, barrels are of no real interest for our wines, as they mark them too much.”
